Steps to Take After a Bike Crash
- Call 911. When you call law enforcement to the scene, they create an accident report that records the other driver’s information and the details of the crash—something you need if you file an insurance claim later. It also helps the city keep track of locations prone to crashes.
- Take pictures. If you can, get these shots:
- The exact location where your bike made contact with the car. Zoom in.
- Wider angle shot of the spot where your bike made contact.
- Don’t be aggressive, but a picture of the driver could be helpful.
- Wide angle picture of the intersection.
- Later, when its safe, pictures of damage to your bike and helmet.
- Picture of your injuries.
- Picture of the driver’s license and their auto insurance.
- Picture of the car’s license plate.
- Contact information for any witness.
- Video is your friend – pan the scene of the crash.
- Go to the hospital. If there is ANY doubt, take the ambulance to the hospital. Adrenalin masks injuries, especially head injuries.
- In the field below, add your phone number and any notes you want to record for yourself later.
